Castelrotto and its surroundings: where tradition and active holidays meet

It's not just sports enthusiasts who get their money's worth in the Sciliar region; culture vultures and connoisseurs also appreciate the picturesque village centres and regional diversity.

Castelrotto, a charming village of around 6,500 inhabitants, is nestled in the beautiful Sciliar region of South Tyrol, between the Val Gardena and the Val di Tires valleys. The village centre is characterised by its architecture: the imposing church with its free-standing bell tower and numerous buildings in the typical South Tyrolean style. The traffic-calmed village centre with its car-free zone is ideal for a leisurely stroll. The many shops offer local specialities and gifts for your loved ones. Thanks to its proximity to the Alpe di Siusi, Castelrotto has a wide range of sporting activities on offer, from hiking and mountain biking in summer to skiing and snowshoeing in winter. A place that harmoniously combines nature, culture and pleasure.

Alpe di Siusi

The Alpe di Siusi in South Tyrol, Europe's largest high-altitude alpine pasture, is a natural paradise at an altitude of up to 2,000 metres and captivates visitors with its unique beauty all year round. Surrounded by the striking Dolomite peaks of the Sciliar, Catinaccio and Sassolungo, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In summer, the hiking and biking trails are particularly attractive in the colourful splendour of the flowers. In winter, the alpine pasture is transformed into a popular ski resort, ideal for skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing and tobogganing. With 300 days of sunshine a year, it is the perfect place to enjoy the Alpine and Mediterranean lifestyle of the region to the fullest. A holiday on the Alpe di Siusi combines outdoor activities with unforgettable scenery.

Kastelruther Spatzen

Who hasn’t heard of the Kastelruther Spatzen, the most successful German-speaking folk music group? Named after their picturesque hometown of Castelrotto in the stunning Sciliar mountains, the band has achieved countless awards and amassed over a hundred gold records. For decades, they’ve been captivating audiences near and far with heartfelt melodies that strike a chord with fans everywhere. Each year, Castelrotto becomes the epicentre of celebration as events and concerts draw thousands of devoted fans to the Sciliar region. October is the highlight, when a massive marquee is set up, and a sprawling car park transforms into a lively hub for three days of morning pints, autograph sessions, and unforgettable evenings with the Kastelruther Spatzen. Nowhere do their songs resonate more deeply than in their hometown, where the bond between the music and the audience feels truly magical.

Places to visit

The Sciliar region is not only a great place for outdoor activities but also a cultural destination with a rich and varied history. With over 2000 years of history, you can uncover fascinating traces of the past: from the remains of a Roman fort and medieval castle ruins to magnificent 17th and 18th century buildings and manor houses. There are four impressive castles and ruins within a 10km radius of Castelrotto. Other cultural highlights include the Ötzi Museum in Bolzano, the Messner Mountain Museum at Sigmundskron Castle and the Botanical Gardens at Trauttmansdorff Castle in Merano.
